Show’n'Tell: “Visual Acoustics” (trailer)
By Thomas Crone
Ordinarily, our goal is to highlight the direct work of Saint Louis artists and creatives of all stripes, but when local organizations and booking entities bring in superb work, there’s no reason to not call attention to them, as well. So it’s our first opportunity to dispense some praise for the Webster University Film Series, which is bringing Eric Bricker’s “Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman” to the Winifred Moore Auditorium this weekend. (Edit: see note in comments section from Marlene Bricker.)
The documentary, which shows tonight-Sunday at 7:30 p.m., highlights so many things loved by (assumedly) the folks reading this site: architecture, photography and film. In fact, Toby Weiss, who wrote for us earlier this week, has already penned a love letter to the film at B.E.L.T., in advance of her own Q&A on the topic this weekend.
Here’s the info, from the WUFS page, including some special extras:
Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman
Weekend, January 29, 30 & 31 at 7:30 pm
(Eric Bricker, 2008, USA, 83 min.)
January 29
Q & A by Stephen Leet (Professor of architecture Washington University) and Marlene Bricker
January 30
Q & A by Toby Weiss (architectural photographer, writer, musician, & blogger), Ken Konchel (architectural photographer), and Marlene Bricker
Narrated by Dustin Hoffman, Visual Acoustics celebrates the life and career of Julius Shulman, the world’s greatest architectural photographer, whose images brought modern architecture to the American mainstream. Shulman, who passed away this year, captured the work of nearly every modern and progressive architect since the 1930s including Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra, John Lautner and Frank Gehry. His images epitomized the singular beauty of Southern California’s modernist movement and brought its iconic structures to the attention of the general public. This unique film is both a testament to the evolution of modern architecture and a joyful portrait of the magnetic, whip-smart gentleman who chronicled it with his unforgettable images.

Thank you for the wonderful article. Actually, Eric Bricker, producer/director is a native St. Louisan. He was born and raised in St. Louis. He is a Parkway West Graduate and moved to L. A. after college. He just moved to Austin, Texas two years ago as Austin is a big independent film city. His family all still reside in St. Louis and he visits frequently. Thanks again.
